Montessori toys for a one-year-old – how to choose for a 1+ toddler

Plushyk|
After the first birthday, toddlers start posting, moving and testing what happens next. We explain what the Montessori approach means for toys and which simple wooden toys – shape sorters, busy boards, activity cubes and puzzles – work well for children aged 1+ and 18 months.

Around the first birthday, the way a baby plays changes completely. Your little one no longer just looks and chews – now they put things in, take them out, move them around, bang them together and check what happens when something slides. That is why Montessori toys for a one-year-old are such a good fit: they are simple, easy to understand and let the child act on their own. Here is what to look for, which toys work well for a 1+ toddler and which are better saved for later.

What does the Montessori approach mean for toys?

Montessori education is based on the idea that children learn best through their own activity, at their own pace. In practice, this comes down to a few simple principles that are easy to apply when choosing toys:

  • Simplicity. The toy does not play music, flash or talk for the child. The child is the active one, not the object.
  • Natural materials. Wood, felt and cotton are popular choices – they feel pleasant and offer different weights and textures.
  • One function, one goal. A classic Montessori toy practises one skill, such as matching a shape or posting a piece through a hole.
  • Independence. The child can see for themselves whether it worked – the piece fits or it doesn't. The adult stays close but doesn't take over.
  • Less is more. A few well-chosen toys on a low shelf work better than an overflowing toy box.

What skills is a child practising after their first birthday?

A one-year-old uses their fingers with growing precision: they pick up smaller objects, drop them into containers, try stacking and unstacking. Many toddlers take their first steps or cruise along the furniture. They are fascinated by cause and effect – "I tap it and it makes a sound", "I drop it in and it disappears". These natural interests are exactly what good Montessori toys for 12 months and up should support, without unnecessary bells and whistles. Every child develops at their own pace, so treat the age on the box as a guideline and your own observations as the most important clue.

Best Montessori toys for a one-year-old

Shape sorter

A shape sorter is one of the most classic toys at this age. The child matches a shape to a hole or a peg, practising hand–eye coordination and patience. Start with a simple model with only a few pieces. A good example is the wooden Montessori shape sorting board 12m+, where colourful pieces slide onto pegs on a sturdy wooden base. You will find more ideas in our wooden toys collection.

Activity cube

A cube with a different activity on each side lets your toddler come back to the same toy in many ways. The wooden 4-in-1 activity cube with xylophone combines a shape sorter, a hammer-and-peg game, a puzzle and a colourful xylophone – according to the product description, it is designed for children from 12 months. Try introducing one function at a time so your child can focus on it.

Busy board

Busy boards gather in one place the kind of things toddlers see every day but usually aren't allowed to touch: latches, sliding parts, knobs. On a board they can explore them as much as they like, safely. The wooden Montessori busy board with friendly animal motifs helps children discover cause and effect and practise fine motor skills. Other models, including foldable felt ones, are in our busy boards collection.

A pull-along toy and a simple starter set

Once a toddler starts walking, they love pulling something behind them. The wooden Montessori 3-in-1 toy set includes a pull-along elephant on a string, an animal shape sorter and a bead maze – three different activities you can introduce gradually. Toys with a string should always be used under adult supervision and put back on the shelf after play.

Montessori toys for an 18-month-old

At around one and a half, most children can handle simple tasks and are ready for a little more challenge. It's a good time for first puzzles with large pieces and toys that combine several activities:

  • pastel wooden vehicle puzzle – the manufacturer recommends it from 18 months, and the large board helps practise dexterity and observation,
  • wooden 5-in-1 activity cube – five activities on different sides in calm pastel colours, for children from 18 months,
  • other puzzles from our wooden puzzles collection – choose ones with a small number of large pieces.

How to set up a Montessori-style play corner

  • A low shelf instead of a toy box. Your child can see the toys and reach for them on their own.
  • Rotation. Put out 4–6 toys, store the rest and swap them every now and then. Old toys suddenly become interesting again.
  • A fixed place. Every toy has its spot to return to after play – a first step towards independence.
  • Time without rushing. Let your toddler keep trying, even if it doesn't work the first time. Step in only when you see frustration building.

Toy safety for children aged 1+

One-year-olds still like to put things in their mouths, so keep a few points in mind when choosing toys:

  • check the age marking on the toy and in the description – save toys labelled 3+ for later,
  • avoid small parts your toddler could swallow,
  • inspect wooden toys regularly for splinters, loose parts or cracks,
  • offer toys with strings and small pieces only during play with an adult.

Frequently asked questions

How many toys does a one-year-old need?

Not many. In the Montessori spirit, it's better to keep a few simple toys on display and rotate them from time to time than to give a child access to everything at once.

Do Montessori toys have to be wooden?

No. Wood is popular because it is natural and pleasant to touch, but felt or fabric toys can work just as well – simplicity and a clear purpose matter more than the material itself.

When can a child start using a shape sorter?

Many simple shape sorters are marked by manufacturers as suitable from 12 months. Start with a model that has only a few pieces, show your child how it works, then let them try on their own.

Which Montessori toys make a good first birthday gift?

A shape sorter, a busy board or an activity cube are all great choices – toys that grow with the child and offer new activities to discover over the following months.
